There was an "invasion" at job centres as Gloucestershire employers advertised 400 vacancies.

An invasion threatened to overrun Gloucestershire job centres when employers boasting vacancies were met by hundreds seeking new jobs.

Doors opened for a jobs fair which brought together 35 businesses and another 10 plus service providers and trainers offering 400 vacancies.

In the opening hour and a half, 350 people had come through the door – and some had walked away with jobs.

Job Centre staff said: “We had all sorts of businesses involved and had an unprecedented level of interest from employers. We had the RAF, the Army, Navy, Fasthosts (CORR), Cargill in Newent, Toys R Us, Laithwaites Wines, Arriva Transport, Stagecoach, Cheltenham Chase Hotel, through to the likes of GKR Karate and Park View Care Home, which has just opened in Trier Way, Gloucester and still has vacancies.”

“We are also working with Premier Inn, which has 30 vacancies at its new Cheltenham business and 20 in Cirencester, and also with Beefeater, which has 40 vacancies.”

The event drew on the expertise of the Prince’s Trust, Gloucestershire College, Prospect Training Services, Learn Direct and GFutures to make sure it reached as wide an audience as possible.

The motivation to find work remains high despite the official figures for June showing the fall in unemployment year on year beginning to tail off.

By local authority area the latest unemployment figures for Gloucester saw a year on year fall to 1,310 people claiming unemployment benefit (down by 65 people).

In Cheltenham, the number was down year-on-year by 55 (six per cent) to 810.

In Tewkesbury, 15 fewer people claimed benefit (three per cent down to 485).

In Stroud the numbers fell one per cent year on year to 485 – five fewer people, and in the Forest of Dean the total of claimants stood at 590 people, down 25 people (four per cent). In the Cotswolds the number was down 20 (six per cent) to 295.
