ESB Accounting are running a landlords accounting services offering help with HMRC in Gloucestershire.
The first is the phased elimination of tax relief on mortgage loans. The second is the increase in stamp duty if you have multiple properties. The third is they are being brought into Making Tax Digital at a level where many will only need to be receiving £834 per month or more every month to be brought into the net.
However there are a number of landlords who do not disclose any rental income even if they have several properties. HMRC are trying to encourage them to disclose but they are contemplating using the criminal courts against those who remain delinquent.
ESB Accounting’s experience is that HMRC are not using all of the information available to them properly to try and identify landlords because the Government has forced them to reduce staff numbers and offices so damaging morale and making their ability to pursue the serious offenders more difficult.
ESB Accounting have made suggestions to the Treasury in the past on how to improve collection of PAYE, VAT and corporation &/or income tax via our MP. We have not heard of any changes which have had much of an effect on the matters we raised even though they require relatively small changes to the system.
